Tagg is a 4-year-old male, who came to Dames for Danes June 4, 2011. It began with a call from a vet’s office, which Karen, our secretary received. The vet’s office explained they had someone present their Dane to be PTS due to illness. For whatever reason, the vet’s office felt this was not necessary and that rescue needed to be an option. From there and within an hour, Tagg was presented to our Nashville representative, Caroline. What appeared before Caroline was a diamond in the rough, with rough being keyword. Tagg just stood there, emaciated and lifeless, covered in pressure sores, maggots, his mouth full of bleeding ulcers, extremely swollen limbs and seemingly without good outcome. Upon evaluation, he was determined to have a high fever and blood tests and biopsies were begun.  Over the course of several days while awaiting all test results, Tagg was not doing good, but we made the decision we were going to persevere. In the end, Tagg was diagnosed with blastomycosis. The blessing, we know what we’re dealing with. The downside, expensive! Tagg’s drug to treat his blasto is just under $200 per week, now getting ready to start week 2 of several weeks of treatment. More good news, week 1 has brought us success in that Tagg is more interested in eating and showing signs of life whereas he had not before.  Given Tagg’s promising future, we anticipate this boy being our “million dollar man”, someday living in his million-dollar home.  In order to accomplish this, your help is needed and would be appreciated… no matter how small…it all adds up! I’m so proud of this team for pulling together and invite you to share in our success, so won’t you please consider donating to Tagg’s ongoing medical care? Donations can be made by visiting our website at www.damesfordanes.org and by clicking the donate button. Thank you for your consideration and if unable to contribute financially, please include Tagg in your prayers!

Lisa, there is a much more reasonable answer to the cost of treating blasto.  Yes, the meds are very expensive.  I have a friend that is treating her boy for blasto right now.  They are using the same drug, but they are having a compounding pharmacy make it, and it is saving a LOT of money.  Do you know these people?  I will get the info and try to get the name of the compounding pharmacy they are using.  Her vet is ordering it from the compounding pharmacy and overnighting it.  Again....SAME drug....but by having the compounding pharmacy make it, a lot less expensive than buying it from the drug company.   Blasto is VERY serious and aggressive treatment is a MUST.  It frequently takes months of treatment.
Poor guy.  I hope they get it under control.   I wonder which organs it has affected?

I started sending this privately, but thought it might be of interest to some here.  Although it's not common, Blasto is a wicked fungal infection.  It requires a long term (months) treatment and even though there are a lot of cases that have good outcomes, there are many where the people didn't keep the dog on the drug for the long term (many times 6 months or even more) and they suffered relapses.  If they are lucky, it's only manifesting on the skin and not involving the lungs or other organs.  At any rate, the drug commonly used is called Itraconizole.  The brand name pill is called Sporanox (who's active ingredient is Itraconizole) and it is very expensive.  I have a friend who is treating a 165 pound male and by having a compound pharmacy make the Itraconizole, the cost was aproximately $165 for a 90 day supply.  Her vet orders it from a compounding pharmacy in NJ.  Blastomycosis is a serious (can be fatal) fungal infection, that is likely to be picked up in soil.  I'll see if either I or Lisa can contact these people and let them know they can get the same drug if their vet will cooperate and prescribe/order it from a compounding pharmacy.

Thoughts and prayers that this boy recovers to have a good life.

OMG.  That poor baby.  Someone cross posted on the General Board.  Thanks for doing that otherwise I'd have never seen this.  Prayers to this sweet faced creature.
