Spoiled Danes

Donna
We went to an auction last year right after we moved to Arkansas.  There was a youth bed with a famous brand mattress on it.  I said I wanted to buy it for a little boy we know.  When we got home, I pointed out that it had pink hearts on the head and foot.  "Well...we can't give a little boy a bed decorated like that"...hubby says.  It took me about five minutes to rig up the ropes to pull it up onto the balcony outside our bedroom.  I made the bed and then called Cygnet upstairs.  I pointed out the bed, whispered that it belonged to her and she was up on it immediately.  Her bed is in front of the door to the balcony, which happens to be on my side of the bed.  When she was ill recently, I pulled her bed right up to my side where I could keep a hand on her.  When I change our sheets, Cygnet's sheets get changed too.  She really hates it every morning when I make up her bed and sneaks back up every now and then to nap after she gets tired of napping on her huge round cushion she lays on in the living room.  Since my computer now works, we plan to make another trip to the pet store when we go to back to Texas for a few days next month...must buy her a cushion bed for the office.  She also gets wrapped presents at Christmas and birthday.  I will be posting a photo of her opening her own presents as soon as I remember how to do it.  She has two huge baskets of toys ranging from squeak toys to a "mink teddy bear".  Her most favorite thing is to ride in "Truck-Truck" since we bought a truck with a back seat.

I too traded in my nice Nissan Maxima sporty car for the 'dane mom' mini van.  We had to find one that the windows in the back would go down so they can hang their heads and fly with the wind.....we went with the Mazda mini van.  Of course the middle row of seats have been removed since day one and sit in the garage.  In their place is now padding and a huge dane doggie bed so they have the most comfortable ride possible.  Our fur babies also have the only bedroom on the main floor stocked with their own human beds and two toy boxes and although our whole house is hardwood floors, we carpeted their room for comfort.  I should mention that even though they have their own room and beds, they still have total run of the house and are allowed on the sofa which Atlas likes to take his afternoon naps.  They are so spoiled that they won't eat their food until I sprinkle a little grated cheddar cheese over the top.  So always on the grocery list is grated cheddar for the babies, not to mention they get leftovers every day....usually steak, salmon, chicken, liver, etc....whatever we are having.  And they eat a very high quality dog food (Merrick) and get kibble as well as can food every day.  I also had 3 acres of our land fenced just for a running pasture for the dogs.  My mom says my dogs are more spoiled than the human grandkids, but that they are also better behaved.

One day, my mother and i took Olivia to Pet Supplies Plus... we walked through the isle with all the different types of bones and such and she wasn't at all interested. so we went through the ball isle. (She absolutely LOVES balls) she picked out this big red ball that squeaked. It was $22. My mother and I both knew that she would have it torn up in about an hour or so but we bought it anyways. We took it home and she started at work. It took her about 2 hours for her to have red rubber spread from one house to the other... We now buy her balls just to time how fast she can tear it into a million pieces. But hey, anything for the baby.

This is about my spoiled 9 month old Black Great Dane Elly. Now it all started in November my dad was looking at the IWANTA and saw some Great Dane puppies for sale and they cost $375. So we went to just look at them. There were 3 puppies left. 2 blacks and 1 merle. So while my parents talked to the owner for an Hour, I played with the puppies. So finally when they were finished I went up to my dad and gave him the PUPPY DOG FACE and he laughed so my mom talked him into getting this Black 7 week old 17 pound Great Dane puppy. We thought about how big she would get.  After all her dad weighs 190 pounds and her mom weighs 170 pounds after she gave birth. So we bought her! She was so sweet or still is but anyway when we got home we let her lay in her bed and go to sleep. When she was little like that we let her sleep on the couch. Now when she's 9 months old, 97 pounds, and 31 1/2 inches tall she still tries to lay down on the couch. She lays out stretching from one end to the other. We can't even sit on it anymore when she gets there. We try to keep her down but we can't she keeps getting back up! Me, my 3 brothers and my parents hope she stops real soon! And her AKC name is Elviras Black Orchid. She is so sweet and loves people.

garbo

Last week Garbo found a gallon jug of shampoo in the laundry room. She loves plastic bottles and this one, although full, was no exception. When she got it in the family room, she chewed off the top and spilled it all over the fairly new carpeting.  We were in the computer room and didn't know this was happening . When I came into the room I could not believe it and called for her. She was under the dinning room table with her ears back knowing she was a bad girl. One look at the sadness in her eyes for misbehaving and she had me.  I never seemed to have trouble scolding my children, but it's hard to scold her, hence, she is spoiled rotten.

Hooch get's a new room

I don't look at my dog's as "spoiled" but...My Husband just built what he call's the dog's den off the side of our house. We can't have kid's so our dog's are all we have. Their room is decorated with doggy decor and the have their own couch and TV. Hooch has his own futon. My Husband built this room because he got tired of coming home from work and sitting in Dane  drool!  Yes, that's how my dane got his name (Turner and Hooch). Even though he's not the same breed! But everybody that's seen the movie know's there's not to much of a difference. I feed them chicken once a week. and I'll save the broth for their gravy the next day. They always have gift's under the tree at Christmas and last Christmas Hooch broke in the living room while we where gone and decided he would open all of the gift's! What a mess! But we love our dog's and they have added so much to our lives and we try to show our appreciation.

Jeronimo (the poor, poor, poor baby) can't win this one because he isn't allowed to sleep on the couch or in the bed - we do catch him on the couch every day but he isn't allowed.
I do believe that he has never in his life went more than five minutes without a pet during the day though.  He is always in the middle of whatever we are doing!  Of course, we love that!

Govy never used to eat unless someone that he liked would stand by him and talk to him as he ate.   My dad, my husband, or I were the preferred eating companions.  This meant, of course, that my parents were the only people that we could ever leave him with.

We had only had our Great Dane for about 2 weeks when we decided that placing her bowls on the kitchen chairs wasn't a good raised feeder for her to have. So we hand made her one out of wood. After is was all assembled we painted it a high gloss black. Which thankfully was also waterproof since she flings water everywhere when she gets a drink. But the high gloss black allowed for the wood grain to show through which looks just awesome. We had used a jigsaw to cut out spots on the top specifically to fit her bowls so they wouldn't move around. Once the paint had dried. We painted by hand her name, food, and water on the top of the feeder. Along with some little hearts to go along with it. Underneath it has a place specifically to store her food and treats. Naww....she's not spoiled at all....  I wish I could paste a picture of it in here...it really turned out pretty neat...

Between the 2 of them, they have 6 beds. Of their own, not shared with humans. There are 2 beds (4 ft x 6ft foam slabs, 5 inches thick, with ahand made quilt each) by the TV. In fact we got rid of our big floor model TV, because we could never see it anyway, let alone be able to use the remote control! and got a portable which could be put high enough (almost!) for us to see past Tara and Magnus. There are 2 more beds around the corner from our bedroom, in the hallway, because Mum refused to move another dresser out of the bedroom. (Mean, cruel woman!) And 2 more beds in the studio, next to the window and the computer. These all have quilts with them and a wool "blankie" to cover them up, if the hardwood floors are cool. I particularly love the way Magnus settles down on his bed, snuggles down, sighs, and lays there with a big smile! The poor dear obviously never had a bed before, let alone a "blankie"!

I was forcibly reminded the other evening, that there are "dog people" and then there are "the others"! We had guestsin, and were chatting in the sitting room, while one very comfy dog had stretched himself across the doorway and was sound asleep, snoring happily. My husband and I had spent all evening, running back and forth to the kitchen for coffee, sandwiches, etc. Which meant we had to use the other door in the room, go down the hallway, across the diningroom and into the kitchen, then make the trip in reverse. After this had gone on most of the evening, one lady inquired "Why don't you just make the dog get up?" My face froze in horror, and I looked across the see the same expression reflected on my husband's face! To make a sleeping dog GET UP!!! and MOVE!!!, let alone, WAKE HIM UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has been an unwritten law in our house for so many years to let "sleeping dogs lie", that we had never even expressed it. It was just taken for granted that one did not disturb the "baby"! Isn't it strange how the other half lives!!!!!!!

Momstudentnurse428
Linda spoiled?  Of course.  She has 3 overstuffed beds on 2 levels of our home, and of course the couch.  We hung 3 toys from ourtree in the front yard so she can play "higher up".  Let's not forget the bloat issue!  I haven't ridden in my van without a 110lb head on my shoulder for close to a year now.  Don't forget her coordinating bandanas to my outifts, daily.  (We are women you know, we must coordinate)  Oops, I almost forgot her personal heater in my home office.  Need I say more??

Magic sleeps in our bed, prefers a cuddle to food he is an absolute joy.  Life without a great dane never again!!!!!

My name is Tierra (Buggy) and my dane is spoiled!!!

Our great dane (Sabastain Bach) is our child in a way. we don't have children and we consider him as the closest to one we will be able to have. He goes just about everywhere with us. Our parents consider him as a grandson just as much as we consider him a son. He get's presents on every holiday and he has a list of babysitters for when he has to stay home. He has more toy's than our nieces and nefews it seems..  He sleeps on his own futon bed directly beside ours. but more nights than not he's up in the bed with us. He truely is a blessing, but is very, very spoiled!!!!

Her name is really Lightning, but I call her Wiggler.  As the rest of you she is very loved but others may call it spoiled.  She has her own couch and chair in the living room, depending on whether she wants to stretch out or curl up.  She also has her own full size bed right beside mine.(Although she prefers to sleep with me).  She will be 7 years this December but is still in surprisingly wonderful shape.  She has 2 cats she treats as her pets and brings a great deal of joy into my life.  Being a single female I would take her over anyone anyday.
