Fix-It-Free: Thanks to recent grants, the Humane Society is able to give out a limited number of FREE spay/neuter vouchers each month. The vouchers can be used at any veterinary clinic in Pagosa Springs. Ten dog neuters, 15 dog spays, 10 cat neuters and 10 cat spay vouchers are given away monthly, beginning the first day of the month on a first-come, first-served basis.
Mothers Aidis a program that pays the total cost to spay female pets that have recently had litters. In addition, the Humane Society will accept the entire litter of puppies or kittens and arrange for their sterilization and placement. Contact the humane society for a Mothers Aid Voucher which can be used at a local veterinarian.
Spay Aid Get your dog or cat spayed or neutered for about half price at any local veterinarian. Contact the Humane Society for a Spay Aid voucer at any time during the year.
Feral Cat ProgramThis program pays for the sterilization and inoculation of feral cats; feral is the term used for domestic cats that grow up without human contact and have effectively become part of the local wildlife. If you are a caregiver or know of a feral cat colony, and you are willing to trap, transport to the veterinarian and re-release the cat, you can get feral cat vouchers from the Humane Society. Humane cat traps are available from the Humane Society. Notify your veterinarian that you will be attempting to trap and transport one or more feral cats so that the veterinarian can be prepared. Once you have delivered a feral cat, your vet will sedate the animal, test it for feline leukemia, and, if negative, will examine the cat, give it inoculations, implant a microchip, notch the ear and sterilize it. The ear notching is a visible way to identify a cat that has already been through the feral cat program; the microchip is a secondary way to identify a sterilized feral cat. Contact the humane society for a feral cat voucher.

Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas
Offered through Texas Veterinary Medical Association . Please visit their site and click on "Member Services" and then "Maddie's Fund".
Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas is a two-year pilot program to spay and neuter dogs and cats belonging to low-income Texas residents in fifty-one counties. The program is administered by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA); surgeries are performed by TVMA private practice member veterinarians.
Maddie's Fund has limited Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project to counties that have provided key shelter data. To be funded, all of a county's traditional shelters and animal control facilities must provide statistics on shelter impounds, adoptions and deaths so that the impact of the spay/neuter program can be measured against baseline shelter data. New counties can be added if they provide the necessary shelter statistics.
Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas is designed to act as a building block grant that stimulates the formation of community collaborations. (A community collaboration is a coalition of traditional shelters, animal control facilities, no-kill organizations and rescue groups committed to reaching an adoption guarantee for healthy shelter animals within five years.) Continuation of funding is based upon meeting collaboration benchmarks throughout the two year period. Maddie's Fund staff is working with Texas communities to help them form collaborations and reach their benchmarks.
Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Texas began in October 2002 with a goal of altering 80,000 dogs and cats.
The cost of the surgery to owner/caregivers is $10 per cat surgery and $20 per dog surgery. Maddie's Fund is contributing between $20 and $90 per surgery, depending upon species and gender. TVMA veterinarians participating in the program will contribute the remainder of the cost by reducing their fees to help more low-income pet owners spay/neuter their companion animals. Clients are asked to show proof of low-income with a Medicaid card and there is a limit of six pets per household.
Maddie's Fund has awarded $1.2 million to the TVMA to support the first six months of the project.
Counties currently funded are listed below: Andrews, Bandera, Bee, Bell, Bexar , Brazos, Camp, Clay, Comal, Cooke, Coryell, Dallas, Ector, Ellis, El Paso, Franklin, Frio, Galveston, Gillespie, Grayson , Guadalupe, Hale, Hays , Hockley, Hood, Jack, Jim Wells, Jones, Kendall, Kerr, Kleberg, Lamar, Lubbock, McLennan, Medina, Midland, Navarro, Nolan, Nueces, San Patricio, Somervell, Stephens, Taylor, Titus, Tom Green, Travis, Uvalde, Victoria, Williamson, Young.

The Prevent-A-Litter program offers reduced-cost spaying and neutering to those needing assistance. WAIF will help by giving them a PAL coupon for $25.00 off spay/neuter fees for a dog or $20.00 off spay/neuter fees for a cat. These coupons are accepted by most veterinarians on Whidbey Island. For more information or to arrange to pick up a discount coupon, call 678-5816 or 331-2818.
The Prevent-A-Litter of Ferals program is for the spaying and neutering of feral cats to help prevent cat overpopulation. At WAIF, we will not euthanize a healthy cat merely because it is a "wild" cat. WAIF advocates spaying/neutering of feral cats to be re-released in their original habitat. To support this position, we have a spay/neuter assistance program to help control the population of feral cats on Whidbey Island. To learn more about how this program works or how you can take advantage of it, please call the shelter at 360-678-5816 or 360-331-5111, ext. 250.
