Encourage Appropriate Chewing

Chewing is actually a very good activity for dogs and puppies.  It stimulates the circulation, exercises the jaw muscles, and actually provides exercise (good for growing pups especially or those that are confined in crates or not exercised for long periods of the day).  It's when the dog begins to chew on inappropriate things (like shoes, furniture, home fixtures) that it really becomes a problem.  One way to help stop the problem is to provide appropriate items for a dog to chew.

Appropriate chew toys include:

  • Rubber or nylon toys such as Kongs, Nylabones, etc.
  • Raw bones such as knuckle bones, femur bones, etc.

Filled toys, such as a Kong filled with frozen peanut butter or yogurt; these will help keep your pet busy for hours.
